A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohmann
Eric Rohmann’s A Kitten Tale was a wonderful book to read aloud to my students. The pictures were engaging and did most of the “talking.” The words supported the pictures but still left room for wonder, predicting, and surprise. According to Rohmann in his 2003 Caldecott Medal Acceptance Speech, “Reading a picture book involves the eye, the mind, and the hand. When you turn the pages, your imagination—your thinking, feeling mind—fills the moments between page one and page two.” Rohmann creates delightful page turns throughout A Kitten Tale. My kiddos mostly agreed that the fourth kitten was brave and unafraid of the unknown. He wants to experience the snow, a new weather pattern they had not yet seen. This is a light-carefree read, that my students loved! The yellow seems to be abundantly present throughout the book, Wooten and Cullinan claim that “yellow denotes happiness, as the color of sunshine” (2009). Frye noticed that the “endpapers are pale yellow…warmer color than mustard- colored kitten. The yellow theme creates a warm happy mood throughout, just like the 4th kitten!
My kiddos’ padlet assignment was to tell me what they thought of the book and to describe the fourth kitten. Most kiddos responded on the padlet wall with positive reviews regarding the book. The majority also believed the fourth kitten was brave.
Today, we will go back and look at the book once again and talk about the picture book’s layout. We will discuss some of the artistic techniques such as lines, colors, shapes/space, texture, framing, and perspective.
One thing I have now taken a better look at is the perspective. I have never thought of the vantage point when viewing illustrations, but now I am much more interested in that!
